May Day is a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on 1 May. In Finland, May Day / Walpurgis night is called Vappu and it is one of the four biggest holidays along with Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and Midsummer. The earlier, pre-Christian origin of the fest in Finland was known as Toukojuhla. Vappu witnesses the biggest carnival-style festival held in Finland's cities and towns. Student traditions are one of the main characteristics of Vappu. Many lukio (university-preparatory high school) alumni wear the black and white student cap and many higher education students wear student coveralls.
