Starcade - "Frogger / Dig Dug / Discs of TRON / M.A.C.H. 3 / Super Astro Fighter" (4/13/1985) 📺 🕹️

Here's another complete broadcast of the video arcade game show Starcade, aired on WTNH Channel 8 in New Haven / Hartford, CT, and hosted by Geoff Edwards. Unlike the other episodes already put up, on this edition (S04E23, original air date January 26th 1984) there is only one person per team - Tony Mancia, 13, who attends Fort Miller Middle School (and really slays 'em in Dragon Slayer - when not swimming or reading); and Michael Hall from Barstow, who works for the Desert Dispatch newspaper as a pressroom foreman. On this show, the games highlighted are Frogger, Dig Dug (Sir Not-Appearing-in-this-Film), Discs of Tron, M.A.C.H. 3 (MACH 3) and Super Astro Fighter; the Grand Prize being the highly awesome video arcade game Moon Patrol. Show voiceovers by Kevin McMahan. Includes: Station ID / end of promo for unnamed show on Sunday at 1pm Show open, introduction of contestants and preview of games to be played today; after which Geoff poses question relating to the Mystery Game; following that, Michael and Mark each have 50-second turns at M.A.C.H. 3 (before which, the concept behind the game is explained) Promo for record album, "Paint a Rainbow in Your Heart" by Rainbow Brite (voiceover by Mark Elliott) Plug for Alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito, followed by description of today's Grand Prize video arcade game; after the initial board tabulation of their scores, Geoff then poses a question to the contestants relating to Wild Western before each gets 50 seconds to play Discs of Tron (today's Mystery Game, following a description of its plot); an update of their scores follows, and the winner of Round 1 plays The Name of the Game Board (with plug for the Bionic Chair and White's Coinmaster Metal Detector) Promos for: ABC World News Saturday (with Kathleen Sullivan) (and ending voiceover promo for Action News by David Henry) The Muppet Hour (with guests Rita Moreno and Ruth Buzzi) "Safety First" PSA from Yale-New Haven Hospital and New Haven Ambulance (with Geoff Fox of Action News on school bus safety and flashing lights) Promo for March of Dimes WalkAmerica for April 28th (voiceover by Janet Peckinpaugh) Brief Starcade Hotline showing animated segment of Space Ace; Round 2 starts with another question (once again, dealing with Wild Western), before they each have a 40-second go at Super Astro Fighter (after Kevin explains what that one's about), after which the scores are tabulated and a plug for the SpectraVideo SV-328 follows Promos for: General Hospital, Name That Tune, Jeopardy! and The People's Court (backing music: "In the Mood" by Henhouse Five Plus Too (Ray Stevens) Star Search '85 PSA for 4H club (call Nancy Weiss) Commercial: Tweet Air '85 for April 21st Winner chooses Frogger over Dig Dug to play for 30 seconds, on his way to the Grand Prize (following description of its plot); after it's all over, he's congratulated by his family as Geoff closes the show and the end credits are shown (recording cuts off at point of plug for RCA in connection with furnishing part of the set) (Technical note: The cutoff of text on the closing credit roll at bottom and top, and where they were positioned, indicate that a Chyron IV character generator - a standard in the industry during the '80's - was used for the lower-thirds, supers and roll.) This aired on local New Haven / Hartford TV on Saturday, April 13th 1985 during the 7am to 7:30am (Eastern) timeframe. About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: [email protected] Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail [email protected] Thank you for your help!
