Go to 18:30 if you're here for the ugliness. Watkins Glen. Great track. Dangerous, challenging, but a real driver's place. I've had high times there, and I've had low times. This is a low time. Drivers can go through the Uphill Esses side-by-side; I've done it a lot. You can pass there; I've done it a lot. But to do that requires situational awareness and skill from all involved, confidence in those that you're driving with, and their cooperation. In this case, Stephen Wheeler (blue Integra), Mike van Steenburg (red/white Miata), and I were dicing for laps, running nose-to-tail, having a good time, giving each other respect and room. At the end of Lap 9, as we were going through T9, I could see we were coming up to lap three slower cars, and predicted it could come together in the Esses. Remembering my 2007 incident, I was thinking to myself, "Don't Be Stupid"... We dispatched the first two cars on the front straight, and as we came up on the T4 Camaro I thought the timing would work out great, that we'd catch him at the top of the Esses where it's easy to go around. Unfortunately, it appears he made mistakes into T1 and we were on him before T2. I do not have the other driver's point-of-view -- when Stephen and I went to talk to him the conversation from others in his paddock was getting aggressive so we cut our discussion short and begged off -- but the situation obviously did not develop as we expected. I recall seeing the Camaro moving right away from me as I was going by, and then...well, you can see for yourself. Regardless of other driver's actions, it is ultimately the passing driver's responsibility to stick a safe pass. We did not do that. I made some assumptions of other driver's actions that turned out to be wrong, and paid the price. The car is repairable, I think; right front frame stove in and maybe the whole nose moved over. Frame work, nose, fender, maybe some suspension parts. Oh, and a new windshield (that was all of about 1 hour's track time old). Not bad, given the possibilities. But I'd rather have gone home with a whole car. Stephen and I talked and we're good. Maybe some day we can have a private chat over a beer with the third driver. - Greg 7/30/15 Update: I received the video from the trailing car immediately behind us... see below link. • SCCA Majors Watkins Glen July 2015, #...
