Two things could be improved there: first of all, it just feels unfinished. I already told you that my galaxy ring wasn’t connected for the first two bike-rides, which was kind of annoying. So it just feels that the app wasn’t fully ready, but Samsung pushed it out with the launch anyway. Now, the second thing that can be improved is data presentation. If we compare the Samsung Health app to the Oura Ring or the WHOOP strap app, the Samsung app just isn’t as good. It is not as cluttered as the Apple Health app, but at least the Apple Watch has very accurate tracking, and things are a bit better there with the introduction of the Vitals app as well. It’s not all bad with the Samsung Health app, there is some advice about how active you should be that day, and they also give you a sleep score, which is nice, with an honestly very oversimplified explanation of how this score was calculated. However, given that this seems largely based on the time spent in the different sleep stages, which didn’t seem great in this initial test, I am not sure how much I would rely on this score. Also, the sleep coaching they provide assigns you a sleep animal, which I find totally cringe, and seems more suitable for children than adults. All-in-all, I am personally not a huge fan of the Galaxy Ring yet, but that doesn’t mean there is no potential. The hard-ware is good, especially details like the charging case, which has a battery of its own, and which is much better than the Oura Ring’s charging station. And you can even see how full the charge of your ring is when you take it off, and looking at the blinking patterns of the LEDs, which is very smart. However, there are a few things that need to happen for me to recommend the ring. First of all, if Samsung does a few more sleep studies and improves their sleep stage tracking, and second they also need to improve the data presentation in the app. If those things happen, I would be really keen to use it, especially since they don’t charge you a monthly fee, like Oura and Whoop do.
