Following the Second World War, a number of war crimes trials were held to bring those SS guards and staff who worked at the concentration camps inside Germany to justice. Many of the trials that took place resulted in the executions of some of the most evil guards, who treated prisoners terribly and contributed to the deaths of thousands. One guard was even condemned after being found responsible for the deaths of 500,000 prisoners. But what shocked many was that many of the guards were young women, who inflicted such suffering and violence. Ravensbruck Concentration Camp was exclusively a womens camp, but it was also a place where many of the most evil female guards were trained. They were trained how to brutally treat prisoners, but also were schooled in the mass murder that took place inside of the German concentration camps. Many of these women were very young, and most female guards once worked at Ravensbruck. Inside of Ravensbruck, the conditions were terrible with much disease circling around and killing thousands, and the sanitation was very poor. There were gas chambers at Ravensbruck, and thousands were killed inside them. But the guards were known for their horrific treatment of women prisoners. It was guards such as Irma Grese, and Elisabeth Volkenrath, along with Maria Mandl who inflicted such horrific suffering at Ravensbruck, before they moved to camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Many women guards were brought to trial after the Second World War in the Ravensbruck Trials, and many were sentenced to death for their horrific crimes.
