Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - The Building of the Ship

Oral reading of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 'The Building of the Ship', first published in 1849 in the book 'The Seaside and the Fireside'. Though he began this long work in the summer of that year, he took a brief hiatus upon the death of his father, returning to finish and publish it in the fall. The poem has stirred many a reader, including Abraham Lincoln. The story of the poem seems to relate the building of a ship, and one might assume this building is a metaphor to the building and careful maintenance of a marriage. It is only when the reader is half through the poem they begin to realize this surpasses both: the ship and the marriage are both metaphor for the building of 'the Union', as in the United States. With this in mind, a second reading gives much more meaning to lines such as the "Great Harry" and other ships that came before, the importance of making a unique vessel, and the imagery put forth relating to various parts of the country from where the timbers were harvested. Longfellow also offers several words of wisdom to this country - that it is not the sea that should chart our course, but our souls holding to what is true; that love and gentleness is that true guide; that the country should avoid "false lights" and sail on.
