Toxic vs. Edible: How to Differentiate Chanterelles, Jack O’Lantern, and Chicken of the Woods

Watch to the end to see a cameo from @🍄Mushroom Auntie🍄 Here is a visual guide to identifying edible Chanterelles (Cantharellus) and Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus) compared with the toxic Jack O’Lanterns (Omphalotus). Both Chanterelles and Chicken of the Woods MUST be cooked thoroughly otherwise they are mildly toxic to consume. Always be careful when tasting wild edible mushrooms for the first time, you never know how your body will react. It is a good idea to try a small bite or two and wait ~20-30 minutes before tasting more, just make sure your body doesn’t react badly. Happy foraging and remember you can upload your photos to iNaturalist for help with identification! . . #foraging #mushroomedu #foragingguide #chanterelle #chanterelles #chickenofthewoods #jackolanternmushroom #ediblevstoxic #mycology #fascinatedbyfungi
