Jacques Arcadelt: O sacrum convivium (1538)

The antiphon "O sacrum convivium" in the Catholic service is usually dedicated to the Eucharist and to the Feast of Corpus Christi. This particular setting by the Flemish composer Jacques Arcadelt was written during his long tenure in Rome when he was composer in residence and a choir member for the Sistine Chapel. One can hear an intricate polyphony that was standard prior to the later rulings of the Council of Trent which discouraged complicated counterpoint, canonic imitations and obscured text. Its sonority bears some resemblance to later Roman works by the likes of Palestrina and Morales. The original MIDI file was created by Allan Garvin and uploaded to the website cpdl.org. I added the words of the motet using the MAIKA Spanish language Vocaloid and pitched the performance up by a half step (A = approx. 466) to better fit the range of boy sopranos. Text (and translation): O sacrum convivium. (A sacred banquet) in quo Christus sumitur: (in which Christ is received) recolitur memoria passionis eius: (recalled is the memory of his Passion) mens impletur gratia: (The mind is filled with grace) et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur. (and the promise of future glory is granted us) Alleluia. Description of the photos: 1. Sistine Chapel interior 2. Concert of angels, detail from fresco, Gaudenzio Ferrari, c1535 3.
