SAUDI COALITION + GOVTIn March 2015 when President Hadi was forced to flee the country, Saudi Arabia scrambled to form a mainly Sunni Arab coalition to salvage his government - an alliance which received support from France, the UK and the US.Today, the coalition controls large swathes of the country;SOUTHERN SEPERATISTSBut a major crack in that coalition has now emerged. The already troubled alliance forged between UAE backed seperatists in the south and forces loyal to President Hadi has been shaken by recent fighting in the government bastion of Aden.In 2018, the 26 member secessioniest organisation - the Southern Transitional Council - had already accused the government of corruption and called for the removal of the Prime Minister. HOUTHISThe Saudi backed government's main foe however remains the Iran-backed Houthi rebels - who belong to a small branch of Shia Muslims known as Zay- dis. They were once loyal to former President Saleh - until he broke ties with the rebels in a move orchestrated by the UAE in 2017Along with their allies, they have a firm grip today over central and northern regions, including the capital Sanaa - but have faced a challenge from government forces for control of the strategic Red Sea port of Hodeidah JIHADISTS The war has also been a petri dish which has allowed jihadist groups to flourishAl Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has a strong presence...while the Yemeni branch of the Islamic State Group has training camps in the south and has attacked several Houthi targets. The 2 groups have also regularly come to blows in the past. PEACE The violence which has raged between these various factions has complicated UN efforts to end the war, which has left tens of thousands dead, and 80 percent of the population in need of humanitarian assistance.
