The thing to remember with shares is that most things are already factored in the price. For instance everyoen knows that Apple is a great brand and that it is making money hand over fist. People know they make new innovative products. However, the things that will move Apple is when such a company releases a new tablet or phone. If people are disappointed the price of Apple stock may well fall. You are essentially trading against someone else, because for every buyer there is a seller. Individual shares usually display higher volatility and moves than stock market indices which is good for us swing traders and day traders. My advice is to pick some stocks that you regularly follow and familiarise yourself with them and the way they typically move. The beauty of stocks is that there are thousands so you could filter them in whatever way you want.
