WHY IS EVERYTHING SILENT IN FRENCH? // How to Correctly Pronounce French Words

Why is everything silent in French? Why is the “r” pronounced in “pour,” but not in “acheter”? And why is the first “e” in “acheter” silent, but the second one isn’t? Like so many others, you are rightfully wondering how to correctly pronounce French words, and more specifically, how to know when a letter is silent in French (which is, unfortunately, very often). But more fortunately, there ARE rules for silent letters in French, which means you can successfully learn what to pronounce in French, and, conversely, what letters are NOT pronounced in French. More often than not, this is going to depend on the placement of each letter in any given word, as well as the surrounding letters. For example, the “n” is silent in “un,” but then becomes pronounced in “une,” and the same goes for the final “t” in “intelligent” (silent) vs. “intelligente” (pronounced).
