Iceland's Major Cluster of Recent Volcanic Eruptions; The Krafla Fires

In the last 49 months, Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula has seen 12 magmatic intrusions occur, which created 5 volcanic eruptions. Yet, this is not the first time within the country that a dense cluster of volcanic eruptions occurred one after the other. Another such example can be found in the far north of the country at the volcano known as Krafla. Between 1724 and 1729, and then again between 1975 and 1984, Krafla produced a dense cluster of volcanic eruptions. This video will discuss these events, known as the Myvatn Fires and Krafla Fires, and discuss what they could indicate to the ongoing situation on the Reykjanes peninsula. Thumbnail Photo Credit: L.
