Fuzz Before Overdrive or Overdrive Before Fuzz?

What's up y'all! For Big Muff Monday, we are comparing the sound between putting fuzz before or after an overdrive. In this video we're using a 1979 Big Muff Op Amp w/ Tone Bypass and a 1990's Tube Works Real Tube Overdrive. Both going through a true bypass switcher. The amp I'm using is a Fender Bassman 1959 Reissue 410 and the guitar I'm using is a Fender Jazzmaster with Sentell Wide Range Humbuckers. Mics are AKG C214 on the cab and a Warm Audio WA87 in the room. The video starts with the fuzz after the od. In this case, the overdrive will push the sound of the fuzz pedal. This gives you more gain, more EQ options, but not necessarily more volume. Depending on how you have your settings, the fuzz pedal's tone will be more prominent and the loudest of the two. This is because it's second the chain, acting as the final output before the amp. When you put the fuzz before an overdrive, you can get a pretty wildly different tone from your fuzz box. You'll get a substantial volume boost (in most cases), a lot more mids, and works well as a tool to cut through the band mix. You tend to lose most of the high fizziness of a Tone Bender or Super fuzz, so you may want to adjust your EQ. One thing to note: the Real Tube has a 12ax7 tube in it and it's meant to emulate a famous Marshall amp. Putting the fuzz after the RT and into a clean Fender amp will act like you're running the fuzz into the fx loop of a driven Marshall amp. If you bring the drive down very low on the RT, it gives the Muff more clarity but adds (in this case) 3 EQ options before the Muff. Having that mid knob on the RT brings a lot of life back into the mids of the Big Muff.
