Deborah Scott, MD, Director of the Multicultural Dermatology Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), describes the specialized dermatology care offered to patients with skin of color. Darker skin often reacts differently to common dermatologic conditions or injuries. Treatments for patients with darker skin are essentially the same but medication dosages may be adjusted to due to the increased amount of melanin in skin of color.
