Pregnancy Week by Week: Fetal Development from Week 0 to Week 40

Pregnancy is the time during which the human fetus develops inside the uterus for 36-40 weeks. Pregnancy starts after sexual intercourse or through assisted reproductive technologies. The pregnancy period is counted as 40 weeks. Week 1 to Week 13 is the first trimester, Week 14 to Week 27 is the second trimester, and Week 28 to Week 40 is the third trimester. Let's talk in week to week development of the fetus in different trimesters. First Trimester The first trimester is a very important and critical phase in pregnancy. The first trimester is the earliest phase of pregnancy which starts on the first day of your last period which is actually 2 weeks before you’re even pregnant and lasts until the end of Week 13. The First trimester is a very critical period and it is full of physical changes and emotions. Nausea, mood swings, feeling tired, shortness of breath, and frequent urination are the most common changes to notice. Week 1 is the week of your period. Week 2 is the week of fertilization Week 3 is the week when fertilized egg travels to the uterus and the egg is implanted in the lining of the uterus. At week 4, after the successful implantation, the placenta forms and your body starts to show the signs of early pregnancy. The fertilized egg is called Zygote and the zygote is the ball-like structure with dividing cells. The zygote is made up of 2 layers and is around the size of a lavender seed. At week 5, the baby’s neural tube forms which later becomes the baby’s brain, spinal cord, and backbone. The zygote is around the size of canola seed. At week 6, the baby’s heartbeat starts and it beats around 105 to 120 beats per minute. The size of the embryo is around the size of a pea seed. At week 7, the baby's eyes, nose, mouth, and ears start to develop and take distinct shapes. The size of the embryo is around the size of a blueberry. At week 8, the baby's hands and feet start developing and the fingers and toes are webbed. The size of the embryo is around the size of a Raspberry. At week 9, the embryo develops most of the organs and looks like a tiny human being. The size of the embryo is around 0.5 inches long and the size of the embryo is around the size of a Cherry fruit. At week 10, Fingers and toes continue to develop and the nail starts to grow. The size of the embryo is around the size of a Kumquat. The internal organs of the embryos develop and the embryo is now called a fetus. At week 11, the fetus starts kicking and stretching its body. Bones begin to develop and get harder. The size of the embryo is around the size of a Fig. At week 12, the baby is able to move its toes and fingers. The baby starts sucking its fingers. The size of the embryo is around the size of a plum and is around 2 inches long. Week 13 is the last week of the first trimester. The fetus has developed fingerprints and it is around 3 inches long. The size of the embryo is around the size of a Lemon. This is the development of the human embryo in the first 13 weeks. Second Trimester This is the most enjoyable trimester of your pregnancy. The second trimester will start from Week 13 to the end of Week 27. And you need to enjoy this trimester as much as you can. At this time, all of your worst symptoms will usually start to decline and go away. You will feel better, nausea will go away, smelling problems will go away and food aversion will go away too. Let’s talk about week by week development of your baby in the uterus. Week 14: At week 14, the baby is around 1.5 ounces and 3.7 inches long. Fine colorless hair called lanugo will develop and cover the body. Week 15: At week 15, the baby weighs around 3 ounces. The fetus will display sucking and swallowing actions which will be visible in the ultrasound. Week 16: At week 16, the baby weighs around 4 ounces and measures around 4.5 inches. At this stage, the baby can hear us and other different sounds. Week 17: At week 17, the fetus weighs around 5 ounces and measures around 5 inches. The fetus develops plenty of blood vessels to nourish the baby through the placenta. Week 18: At week 18, the sex organs are visible, and you would be able to determine if your baby is a girl or a boy through an ultrasound examination. The baby could be sucking its thumb frequently. Week 19: Week 19 is very special as it is halfway through the pregnancy. A white greasy substance called vernix covers the baby's skin and prevents chapping and scratching of the baby's skin. Week 20: At week 20, the fetus weighs around 10 ounces and measures about 6.5 inches long. The baby moves a lot and the mother would be able to detect the movements easily. Week 21: At week 21, the fetus weighs around 12 ounces and the baby will continuously swallow the amniotic fluid through the mouth. Week 22: At week 22, the baby's tastebud will develop in the tongue and it will be able to sense what you eat.
