The Best Hike From Capileira - Acequias del Poqueira

Route: Acequias del Poqueira Distance: 20 KM Time: 7-8 hours Level: Moderate Back in March 2019 we hiked Acequias del Poqueira, a 20 km circular route through the Poqueira Gorge. The walk begins and ends in Capileira, a stunning town built into the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. The rugged trail passes through the deserted town of La Cebadilla, climbs the side of the gorge, crossing grassland and rivers. You’ll also come across many abandoned buildings, some now inhabited by cows and other farm animals. They have a fascinating history, built by the Moors between the 8th and 15th Century, dotted all over the hillside. It’s a long route but a must for anyone visiting Andalucía. There is a where you can refill water or stay, note that visiting Refugio de Poqueira adds 1.5 - 2 hours onto the trail. We preferred refilling our bottles from the Acequias, shown in the video above, one of the highlights of the trail. They are channels dug into the side of the valley, creating a traditional irrigation system for farmers.
