We’re repairing the hydrostatic transmission control system on this Cub Cadet 1772, the beloved baby of our friend Jeff, who caught the Cub Bug when he bought that dead Cub Cadet 2130 we found on the marketplace and coaxed back to life. He’s having problems with the forward and reverse controls, particularly a very slow reverse. We’ll examine the old, worn-out hydrostatic transmission system to demonstrate the internal issues causing the sloppy transmission, discuss the symptoms generated by these problems, and talk about replacing the control plate and bracket in Part 2 next week. We’ll also whip out the calipers for some quick comparison measurements that will show us just how badly worn the plate and bracket are before we install their replacements – along with new buttons, springs, shims, and snap rings – then test the system and adjust for neutral.
