Mic use : https://amzn.to/3PTYgYV What is Dandruff? Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flakes of dead skin to appear in the hair and on the shoulders. It is usually accompanied by an itchy scalp and can be embarrassing for those affected, though it is generally harmless. Dandruff can vary in severity and may worsen during certain seasons, such as winter. Causes of Dandruff Dry Skin: One of the most common causes of dandruff. Dry, flaky skin on the scalp leads to white or grey flakes. Seborrheic Dermatitis: A more severe form of dandruff caused by oily, irritated skin. It affects areas rich in oil glands, including the scalp, eyebrows, and sides of the nose. The skin may appear red and greasy with yellow or white scales. Malassezia Yeast: Malassezia is a type of fungus that lives on the scalp of most adults. For some people, this yeast can irritate the scalp and cause an increase in skin cell production. These excess skin cells die and shed off, forming visible dandruff flakes. Hair Products (Contact Dermatitis): Sensitivity to certain hair care products, like shampoos, conditioners, or hair sprays, can cause a red, itchy scalp and lead to dandruff. Poor Hair Hygiene: Infrequent washing of hair can allow oils and dead skin cells to build up on the scalp, leading to dandruff. Diet and Stress: Poor nutrition, especially lack of zinc, B vitamins, and certain fats, may trigger dandruff. Stress can also worsen dandruff as it affects overall health. Symptoms of Dandruff Flakes: White or yellowish flakes of dead skin are the most visible sign. Itchy Scalp: Often accompanied by persistent itching. Red or Greasy Scalp: This may happen if the cause is seborrheic dermatitis. Scaly Patches: These patches can extend beyond the scalp, affecting eyebrows, ears, or even the chest. Treatment Options for Dandruff 1. Allopathic Treatment (Medicated Shampoos) Zinc Pyrithione: Helps fight the fungi responsible for dandruff. Ketoconazole: Antifungal ingredient that treats dandruff caused by Malassezia yeast. Selenium Sulfide: Reduces fungal growth and decreases the rate of skin cell turnover. Coal Tar: Slows down the rate of skin cell death and shedding. Salicylic Acid: Exfoliates and helps remove dead skin cells from the scalp. Usage: Apply medicated shampoos to the scalp and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing. Use them regularly (about 2-3 times a week) or as directed by your healthcare provider. 2. Home Remedies Coconut Oil: Moisturizes the scalp and has antifungal properties. Apply warm coconut oil to the scalp, leave for 20 minutes, then wash. Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Add a few drops to your shampoo. Apple Cider Vinegar: Reduces fungus and balances the scalp’s pH. Mix with water and use as a rinse after shampooing. Aloe Vera: Soothes the scalp and reduces inflammation. Apply pure aloe vera gel to the scalp before washing. Lemon Juice: Its acidity helps balance the scalp’s pH and reduces flakes. Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to the scalp before washing. 3. Lifestyle Changes Manage Stress: Reducing stress can prevent dandruff from getting worse. Healthy Diet: Include foods rich in zinc, B vitamins, and healthy fats to improve scalp health. Wash Hair Regularly: Ensure regular washing to keep the scalp clean and prevent oil build-up. Precautions Avoid Irritating Products: Use gentle, sulfate-free shampoos if you have a sensitive scalp. Don’t Scratch: Scratching your scalp can worsen irritation and lead to infection. Consult a Dermatologist: If over-the-counter treatments don’t work, a dermatologist can help identify any underlying skin conditions. DISCLAIMER: This video is for informational purposes only.
