Golapganj came into existence on 20 October 1906 as thana. However, there is no record of any administrative center at Golapganj during the Pathan period and the subsequent Mughal period. It is known that during the Mughal period there was a system of revenue collection in the south of Dhaka. At that time the Chowdhury people, certified emperors of Delhi, were engaged in this duty. Later, during the British rule, the first thana administration was in Hetimganj. In 1908, the then British government shifted the police station office near Golapganj Bazar on the banks of the Surma. (Bangladesh National Portal, 2023) During the reign of Emperor Muhammad Shah (1819-48) the time of the Mughal rule, Mr. Golap Roy (came to Sylhet from Murshidabad) as was appointed the Dewan (Revenue collector) of Sylhet area in about 1840. Golap Roy later set up a trading centre (which means: ganj) on the bank of the river Surma, this is how it was named 'Golabganj' after his name. The Upazila might have derived its name from this area name where its headquarters is located.Golapganj has 11 Unions councils, 98 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 245 villages. (Golapgonk Blogspot, 2023) Soon after taking charge, this devout Dewan came to know about Sri Chaitanya's fatherland in Dhaka Dakshin of Golapganj. Roads and bridges were built from Sylhet to Dhaka Dakshin under the direction of the Dewan. On this road he came to Dhaka Dakshin and set up a temple in the ancestral land of Dewan Sri Chaitanya, digging a dighi (big pond) in front of it. The road from Hetimganj to Dhaka through Barokut Village is still known as Dewan Road. There is an ancient culvert on this road called Dewan Pool. (SylhetGov office, 2023) The village Barokut comes under Dhakadakshin Union (no.6).
