One of the biggest problems I have seen by home builders, designers and architects over the last 30 years has been in the design layout of our homes, and it’s a thing that most people don’t really focus enough…. MUDROOMS! Thats right guys, mudrooms. One of the least places in a home, but one that can drastically improve the flow and function of your home and how your family lives in it. Ok, let’s start from the start. What is a mudroom and why does this matter? A mudroom is the room or area generally found in between your attached garage, and your house. In colder climates, it is the entrance that we use most of the year, as we generally park in the garage year round. A mudroom is a variety of things. It’s an entrance. A place for shoes and boots. Coats to be hung and easily accessed. A drop zone for groceries, keys, sports equipment and mail. It can hold storage, toques, mitts and umbrella’s. A place to sit down, and take your shoes off without have to lose you balance, and hold onto the wall for support. From my experience, it’s about half to a quarter the size of your front entrance, because people have been brainwashed to think that a front entrance must be grand and spend lots of money to give it a wow factor and impress their guests. That all could be true, but I want to focus on the area that you will be using DAILY, and one that affects how you come into your house almost every time. Mudrooms are the main entry point from the garage, generally the place where we park and come into the house 99% of the time. Have you ever lived in a home with a small mudroom?
