Some people only found out after the fact what Hamlisch had done on their behalf. Hamlisch never drew attention to his countless acts of kindness to friends, colleagues and strangers, but after his death in 2012, his wife Terre Blair Hamlisch received tens of thousands of letters from people who shared stories of how Hamlisch had personally helped them in their time of need.
