Replacement Pulley Wheels: Bling for the Bucks??

There are some really cool third-party cheap pulley wheels (also called jockey wheels) available to add bling to your bike and the bicycle rear derailleur. Third party are ones not made by the manufacturer of your derailleur. They say they’re compatible with the speed (9, 10, 11, 12 speed) but are they really? Is the bling effect worth even this small investment? Pros 1. Nice cool look 2. Some say that ceramic give you a few extra watts? (Do you really think 1-2 watts savings is going to make your day?) Cons: 1. Some ceramic pulley wheel bearings are not sealed and when we remove the cap, we can see the exposed bearings which can easily pick up dirt and grime inhibiting movement and wearing the bearings. The alloy cap does not replace a good seal. 2. May have thickness too big to fit in the derailleur and not spin. We’ve installed these third party on this derailleur (see how to replace pulley wheels at the end of this video). We can see that the one we use for the alignment pulley wheel is too wide and jams. Others may be too narrow and fail to track properly. 3. The teeth may not be the exact size and width as the original and the chain may not engage the chain properly leading to noise, poor shifting and poor performance. 4. In some cases, you may fine no problem with the tension pulley (which does not require the precision of the guide pulley) and may work where the guide pulley fails. 5. Most third party pulleys are alloy and wear far faster then the heavy plastic wheels used in may derailleurs. The manufacturers of these plastic wheel claim they are self-lubricating although I’m not sure what that means. So, is the bling worth the few bucks? No. If the pulley wheel fails, you're stuck out on the road. Try to obtain them via the manufacturer or try to obtain those specific for your rear derailleur. Check the part number on the rear derailleur. Then visit the SRAM or Shimano website https://www.sram.com/en/service https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/home.html to obtain the part number of the pulley wheel and search on the part number. For more details, see the video in the upper right. For older derailleurs, check Ebay or other similar sites to replace jockey wheels. Sometimes you can find the complete NOS derailleur (that's New Old Stock) for less than the original pulley wheels themselves. Or check with your LBS. One other note: You can buy expensive ceramic pulley wheel that range from $300 up. But believe me, to increase power by less than 1 watt, concentrate on losing a pound or two, strengthening your legs, cleaning your drive train, not new pulley wheels!
