Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is situated on the outskirts of Madurai City, an ancient city of Tamilnadu, dedicated to the deity Lord Murugan, also worshipped by the name ‘Lord Subramanyar’, God of Tamil Language. Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is a cave temple which is 1050 feet above sea level made out of rock in a hillock. The Rajagopuram (Main Tower) of this temple is found with 7 tiered structures, towering 150 feet high at the entrance of the temple. Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is the place which is associated with the divine marriage of Lord Murugan with Goddess Deivayanai and so it is considered as a sacred place for marriages. The main shrine contains rockcut sanctum sanctorums which houses the deities ‘Lord Murugan’ and ‘Goddess Deivanai’ with ‘Maharishi Narathar’, ‘Lord Shiva’, ‘Lord Ganesh’, ‘Lord Vishnu’ and ‘Goddess Durga’. This is the only temple where Lord Murugan is seen with his consort Goddess Deivayanai only, whereas in all other temples, Lord Murugan is found with both of His consorts Goddess Deivayanai and Goddess Valli. Festivals 25 festivals are celebrated in this temple in a year. By Road The Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple is about 7 Kilo meters from Madurai City on the Madurai to Kanyakumari highways. By Train There is a train route from Madurai to Thiruparankundram. This town is about 8 kilo meters from Madurai railway junction. By Air Madurai Airport is about 10 kilo meters in the south east direction.
