The Amri Karbis, one of the four sub-tribes of the Karbi community, boast a rich cultural heritage and significant historical roots. Originating as a warrior tribe, they once held an autonomous kingdom led by a king from the Ronghang clan of Kolong, with their people now primarily dispersed across the Kamrup and Nagaon districts of Assam. A pivotal chapter in the history of the Amri Karbis of Assam is linked to the Merangkong Godhula Mission in Nagaland. This mission was established during the centenary celebration of the Baptist Church of Merangkong, in honor of Godhula Babu, who baptized the first converts in Merangkong on March 5, 1881. The mission's purpose was to continue spreading the gospel to those who had yet to hear it. On March 5, 1983, Rev. P. Puna Ao and his family were commissioned as missionaries by the Merangkong Baptist Church, Nagaland. Their efforts culminated on August 7, 1983, when 40 Amri Karbis embraced Christ as their Savior and were baptized. This event marked a profound spiritual milestone in the history of the Amri Karbi community.
