Re-Examining of Sedition Law | Should the Sedition law be done away with? | India Upfront

In this episode of India Upfront, Rahul Shivshankar will be discussing the revision order on sedition law. The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Centre to re-examine the sedition law and sought government's response to a suggestion that registering of new cases under the colonial-era law to be put on hold till the review exercise is over. The Supreme Court order came a day after the government sought more time to respond to petitions challenging the sedition law saying it had decided to review it. Should the Sedition law be done away with? "Speaking truth not treason but patriotism. Listening to truth is state's duty", said Rahul Gandhi soon after the SC hearing. There are certain significant overlaps between the provisions of UAPA and Section 124A. Therefore, one needs to reconsider whether you need both laws. In order to safeguard the sovereignty and integrity of the state, there are certain laws that are necessary but not 'draconian' laws like that of Section 124A: Congress' Lokesh Jindal.
