Air Assault demonstration carried out by the American 101st Airborne Division ‪@101stAASLTDIV‬ and Dutch 11th Airmobile Brigade ‪@11LuchtmobieleBrigade‬ to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden in 2024. Not only did this training exercise take place on the same ground as Drop Zone Able where elements of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment landed 80 years ago, but it was also held at the exact same time and day in the early afternoon of the 17th of September. Safety note: this is a planned military exercise conducted by trained professionals in a safe environment. All small arms are blank firing and explosives are simulated by pyrotechnics. Description of events: The air assault begins after an aerial bombardment to suppress the OPFOR (played by Dutch airmobile forces) who are defending multiple structures. Two American UH-60 Black Hawks drop-off American weapons teams who set-up in the nearby woods. They employ their company-level 60mm mortars and platoon-level M240L machine guns to suppress the remaining OPFOR while two American CH-47 Chinooks bring in the rest of the Dutch-American company-sized task force who quickly regroup in the woods. Under heavy suppressive fire and artificial smoke American combat engineers use explosives to breach a wire obstacle and mark the passage with flags for the assault force. The tripod-mounted machine guns in the woods keep up their suppressive fire while the first rifle squads of the assault force funnel through the breach and fan-out into four-man fireteams. In small bounds the Dutch and American rifle squads advance using fire and maneuver between their fireteams while the platoon-level machine guns continue their overhead fire support. The assault force clears out the OPFOR from the structures using hand grenades and close range rifle fire. The assault force takes a casualty who is evacuated by Black Hawk. While the rifle squads consolidate near the now cleared objective and the platoon machine guns are brought forward from the woods, another Black Hawk quickly drops-off supplies. Two American Chinooks deliver Dutch light utility vehicles using a sling-load. The exercise is complete and the Dutch and American troops line-up for the audience while the four American helicopters fly past.
