Usually I avoid doing songs that there's a million covers of already, but the Super Metroid soundtrack is particularly excellent, so I put together this cover of the Lower Brinstar theme! This song's got it all, melancholy harp, apocalyptic midi choir aaaahs, telephonic drums, lead ocarina, and more! It's moody, it's dark, and it sounds like Metroid! For my arrangement, the biggest decisions were choosing what I wanted to migrate to guitar and bass, as I feel like all the midi patches in the original song are crucial elements of the song and didn't want any of them to be drowned in guitar. I wound up doubling the main harp riff and the ocarina and piano leads in unison. The piano lead I initially thought I wasn't going to be able to learn as I barely play keyboard, but ironically it was slightly easier on piano than guitar! For the drums, I jammed through the song a few times to feel out the parts that I finally settled on, which are basically improvised feels as opposed to precise drum parts. For the solo at the end, as I improvised takes on the song, I figured out certain types of things I wanted to try and put in the solo, but it's very stream of conscious. Tracking was all my usual double tracked guitar on a Fender Cybertwin mic'd with a sm57, bass direct in, keys direct in, and drums with my usual microphone setup. To replicate the telephonic drums in the original game, I tracked muted guitar and ran it through a delay. On the master bus, rather than using the General Dynamics plugin I've done for the past several, I went back to the stock reaper multiband compressor, which preserved the dynamics a bit more. Not sure if it actually resulted in a better mix though! Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed this particular cover of many covers of this excellent song, it's probably the only one with an inappropriate drum solo at the end! Hit that subscribe button!
