The minimum resolution required for publication is 300dpi (dot per inch). Some of the journals want even 720dpi and higher. The figures that we obtain from the computer screen or PACS is usually 96dpi which is well below the acceptable level for publication. The low-resolution of figures is a common reason for rejection of manuscripts which are sent for publication in the medical journals.
