One of the best Consumer grade CRTs. When I say "it feels like a bit of perfection", this is what I mean. This TV was made when Sony was at the top of their game. It has an apeture grill, single plane curved glass and a jungle chip. All superior technolgies compared to the compitition. After this TV Sony started making flatscreen CRTs and not because flatscreens are a superior technolgy but because they wanted to compete with LCDs. Sony also switched to the silver form factor and got rid of the jungle chip. All these changes are for the worst and mark the beginning of the decline for Sony in the CRT market. The XBR48 was the best TV that the best company could make at the height of the CRT era. When I zoom into the XBR you can see the mask of the screen (black vertical lines). This is partly due to the TV not being as sharp as a PVM but it is also due to the fact that the fricken thing is huge. If you sit at the proper distance the mask of the screen is not visible. If I get really fricken close to the BVM I can just barely make out the mask as well but that thing is only 19 inches.
