Ali Omar El-Farouk - Capricho Árabe (Francisco Tárrega)

Ali Omar El-Farouk - Capricho Árabe (Francisco Tárrega) Recorded at Dar Omar El-Farouk at Tunis Village in Fayoum, Egypt, on April 27th 2020 Guitar made by Jeremy Clark 52 Instrument Co. Mixing and Mastering: Ali Omar El-Farouk Video Editing: Ali Omar El-Farouk From the very first harmonic chord strum, Francisco Tárrega’s Capricho Árabe immediately transports its listener to another world. Followed by a fast melodic run afterwards, the sound of that phrase is played in the harmonic minor fifth mode in the key of A, also known in the Arabic Maqam system as Maqam Hijaz. It is arguably the greatest meeting point between Arabic and middle eastern music, and flamenco music of the south of Spain, Andalucía. Then the straightforward harmonic movement that follows, leading into the first theme of the piece, establishes quickly the main tonality in the key of D minor. One of the things I love the most about playing this section is how it offers so much liberty for the performer to play with the tempo, slow down when needed, take a pause, then continue back in tempo. Then unexpectedly, the rhythm pauses in a cadenza where a beautiful fast run builds so much tension, followed by a much-coveted release. The modulation that follows, transitioning into the key of F major, takes us from a melancholic melody to a joyful one. But then surprisingly, Tárrega’s compositional genius modulates the harmony back to A harmonic minor fifth mode, completely changing the mood. Then the harmony changes yet again! Starting with an ascending chromatic line that keeps accelerating and building tensions very quickly, modulating into yet another tonality, this time in D major. The theme in this section is quite happy and playful. Played four times, it ends differently every time. The last time it ends on such a high note where the rhythm stops momentarily, making for even more tension, closing the section with a very gentle harmonic movement that transitions very seamlessly back into the original tonality of D minor to end the piece. I hope that you will enjoy listening to it, and may it bring peace to your heart. 🎵🎶 I dedicate this recording as well as the other recordings in this series of classical guitar music to Tarek Sharara who encouraged me to create these recordings. © Ali Omar El-Farouk 2020
