This video covers installing linux lubuntu as a dual boot on the internal nvme hard drive for the dell 5400 latitude chromebook laptop. Prepwork: Enable Recovery Esc + F2 Turn off OS Verification Enable Developer Mode CTRL + D Update boot firmware (allow boot linux) Enable internet and run mrchromebox firmware utility to add RW_LEGACY boot firmware *Boot into LINUX with USB flash drive if you want (optional)) CHRX first run to Repartition Hard Drive Automatic Repair of Chrome OS upon boot CHRX 2nd run to install linux Gallium OS, Ubuntu, Fedora Repair Grub Boot Loader ???? Prepwork: Enable Recovery Esc + F2 With computer turned off. Press and hold ESC + F2 Press power… and wait until recovery screen appears. You should be booted into Recovery Screen Press Space to TURN OFF OS verification The chromebook may reboot after this step In recovery, (OS Verification Screen OFF) Press and hold CTRL + D to initiate developer mode. Follow the prompts to prepare developer mode. This will take about 5-15 min. (see progress bar at top right) Finally, it will reboot into recovery screen once more. Press Ctrl + D to boot into Developer mode (or just wait) 1. Install Boot Firmware RW_LEGACY Go to https://mrchromebox.tech/#fwscript Need to run this script while booted into Chrome OS cd; curl -LO mrchromebox.tech/firmware-util.sh && sudo bash firmware-util.sh Boot into Chrome OS . Press CTRL+D at OS Verification splash screen You don’t need to log into Chrome OS. From login screen, open VT2 terminal with: CTRL + ALT + F2 If you want to get back to Chrome OS, press CTRL + ALT + F1 A. Ensure Wifi is connected B. Open VT2 Termial with CTRL+ALT+F2 C. Run script to download/run firmware install utility D. Choose option 1. and press enter E. Verification screen appears asking if you are really sure. Press Y and enter. F. After a minutes your done. You can now boot into legacy boot manager at recovery screen with CTRL + D G. This means you can try out linux live flash drives from USB. YAY!!!! 2. Prepare the Internal Hard Drive Go to https://chrx.org/ Need to run this script while booted into Chrome OS curl https://chrx.org/ | sudo tar xzfC - /usr/local && chrx You don’t need to log into chrome. Press CTRL+D at OS Verification splash screenFrom login screen, open VT2 terminal with: CTRL + ALT + F2 If you want to get back to Chrome OS, press CTRL + ALT + F1 A. Ensure Wifi is connected B. Open VT2 Terminal with CTRL+ALT+F2. Log in as chronos C. Login as chronos D. Run script to download/run CHRX (see above) This 1st run will initiate repartition of Internal Hard Drive Safely (preserving chrome OS) E. Select the size you want and press enter F. In less then a minute.. It should finish and then Reboot. 3. Reboot into Chrome OS (time for repair) When you reboot into chrome OS after repartition of Hard Drive, you will see a OS Repair Screen. This is normal as chrome os repairs itself. Takes about 5-10 minutes and reboots to boot splash screen. 4. Rerun chrx script to install Linux! Go to https://chrx.org/ Need to run this script while booted into Chrome OS curl https://chrx.org/ | sudo tar xzfC - /usr/local && chrx Press CTRL+D at OS Verification splash screenYou don’t need to log into chrome. From login screen, open VT2 terminal with: CTRL + ALT + F2 If you want to get back to Chrome OS, press CTRL + ALT + F1 A. Ensure Wifi is connected (because it repaired, wifi is cleared. Please re-connect) B. Open VT2 Terminal with CTRL+ALT+F2. Login as chronos C. Run script to download/install CHRX (see above) This 2nd run will actually install LINUX. If you want to install a different version of linux (GALLIUM OS DEFAULT), then type at end -d [linux version] For instance, here are examples of the line with lubuntu or kubuntu: curl https://chrx.org/ | sudo tar xzfC - /usr/local && chrx –d lubuntu curl https://chrx.org/ | sudo tar xzfC - /usr/local && chrx –d kubuntu D. Please select default prompts to continue installing Linux. E. In about 15-30 minutes.. It should finish and then ask you to reboot. 5. You now have Dual boot Chrome OS/Linux… Sort of. 6. Make Space on EFI Partition 12 Create tmp directory, Mount to it: sudo mkdir /tmp/a sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p12 /tmp/a Navigate to /syslinux/ directory and delete largest files vmlinux… We don’t need these files since they’re incorrect anyways. When I try to fix the bootloader I can’t because EFI partition is too small. That’s why we delete these two files. sudo rm vmlinux* 7. Repair your Grub Boot Loader! 1. Download and install live linux with a boot repair tool. (rufus + USB flash drive) Linux Mint Cinnamon 2. Boot into Linux Mint Cinnamon and run the Boot Repair tool.
