Athens seems a fitting place to start our '23 trip! This a very different city to the one I visited during the Great Garbage Strike of summer 1990. It's now one of the cleanest cities I've been to (although some of the sidewalks don't look like they've been upgraded since 500BC). We stood on the Pnyx where Themistocles in 483 BC persuaded the council to spend the profits from a newly discovered silver mine on a fleet of warships, which went on to defeat the Persians 3 years later. If they had instead voted to distribute the money evenly among the citizens (which was the popular consensus at the time), it could have spelt the end of democracy as we know it ¯\_(⊙︿⊙)_/¯ We have a lot to thank the Greeks for!! And of course the food here is amazing.....and cheap!! A really good souvlaki here is €3. Or the most delicious cheese and spinach pie you'll ever taste is just €2. Not surprisingly, the best places are family run. Our local grocer here, who we've become good friends with, is a family business with his brother, sister, father, and dog. They delight in talking about the quality of their food. I've never seen someone so excited about a potato (except Mr Potato). Luckily we spent the last 6 weeks studying Greek, which has been pretty useless so far since most here can speak good English, but the locals are pleasantly surprised we can speak any Greek at all.
