Mostly closed creates a slow nearly silent orange flame similar to what you get with a traditional campfire burning wood. Perfect for creating a true to camping ambience. Mostly open creates a fast blue high BTU flame perfect for fast boiling or cooking. #2 is the "Emberglow Titanium Heat Diffuser which disperses heat to a wider area for more even pan cooking or can be used to create radiant heat for grilling.
