Heat therapy and cold therapy have their own advantages. It is basically to relieve pain and also to increase circulation. Heat therapy can be provided with heat pad or moist heat like towel dipping in the heat water and placing on the affected part. On the other hand cold therapy is to reduce the inflammation particularly. During both the therapies there are lots of chemical reactions that goes on with the tissues and muscles. So alternate heat and cold therapy can also be given if there is any swelling. Particularly for the relaxation of a particular area 15b minutes duration is okay with both and cold therapy. It should be done 5 to 6 times a day with one hour interval. So it is always better to go on with alternate heat and cold therapy because heat therapy if given excessively can cause inflammation.
