20191106 Research Data Discovery Developing a Data Catalog

https://ala.org/alcts An ALCTS webinar. Research data sharing is required by many funding entities including US government agencies and foundations. Many datasets reside in repositories on the web but not all. Some researchers store data on local area networks, hard drives, and even flash drives. This data should also be discoverable. The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Health Sciences and Human Services Library, created an institutional data catalog to capture datasets created by UMB researchers regardless of where the datasets reside. This presentation will introduce participants to the process of developing a data discovery tool. It will provide background information about the project and the Data Catalog Collaboration Project (DCCP), a multi-university initiative. It will also outline resources such as personnel and technology needed to develop a data catalog; provide strategies for outreach at both organizational and individual levels; review steps in building records including the development of a template, challenges of dataset description, metadata assignment, and the development of a workflow.
