Many people love charity. Many people love volunteering. The rich donate to institutions to help the less fortunate –– those that are in poverty, unemployed, disabled, or marginalized. However, the aforementioned issues prevail in our nations’ economies. Often, solutions to issues like refugee displacement are addressed with housing and camps and issues like low household income is addressed through employment, albeit minimum wage jobs. These are short-term unsustainable solutions that only address the issue at the surface-level, instead of tackling the problem at its roots. In this inspiring talk, Vivian Hnin Zar Ni dives into this flaw through her philanthropic approach and shares insights on the steps we can take to create a more lasting impact in the community. Vivian Hnin Zar Ni is a passionate supporter of micro-finance and an exceptional advocate for positive change within Yangon International School as well as the larger Myanmar community. As President of Student Council, she has organized fairs and activities that connects members of the school community. She combines her experience in legal and finance internships to drive impactful financial initiatives in rural parts of Myanmar and among underprivileged small business owners working in retail and agriculture. As the president of Microloans YIS, she has also organized webinars to promote financial literacy in her community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
