Whenever there is a noticeable noise that you hadn't heard before coming from the transmission area of your lawn or garden tractor, we usually fear the worst while hoping that we're wrong and it's just something simple to fix. And let's be honest, we hope that it will not only be a simple, but an inexpensive fix as well! After we posted the video showing how to adjust the foot pedals on a John Deere X300 & X500 series tractor we received a lot of comments and emails thanking us for that information because many people thought their transmission was starting to fail. In some cases, it was even worse than that because people were being told by dealers that their transmission would need to be replaced even though the issue was caused by the adjustment of the foot pedals. Well hopefully we can help even more people with this video. This is another common issue with the John Deere X300 and X500 series tractors as well as with tractors from many other manufacturers such as Husqvarna, Simplicity, Cub Cadet, etc. The symptom that you will notice is that there will be a growling noise, and possibly excessive vibration, coming from the tractor's transmission. Because this is all coming directly from the transmission it can lead you to think that it is an internal problem with the transmission and it's probably going to need to be replaced. But if you look a little deeper into the situation you will probably find that the extra noise and vibration is coming from the pulley on the transmission. The pulley has splines in its bore that match up with splines on the transmission input shaft. The transmission shaft is made of a harder material than the pulley so the splines in the pulley will wear instead of the splines on the transmission shaft. They are made this way because it is easier to replace the pulley than it is to disassemble the transmission to replace the shaft. Now that you know this is the issue with your tractor you are probably thinking that you will need to remove the mower deck, remove the transmission, and then you'll be able to change out the worn pulley, right? Well, you could go through all of that work if you really want to. But as you can see in this video there is a much easier and quicker way to remove and replace the transmission pulley on a John Deere X300 series tractor.
