In India, the Indian Railways conducts apprenticeship training programs for various trades as a means of providing on-the-job training to young individuals while they learn skills in their chosen trade. These programs are conducted in partnership with the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) and the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET). The Indian Railways Apprentice program is open to individuals who have completed their 10th or 12th grade education with a minimum percentage of marks. The selection process includes a written test followed by an interview and medical examination. The training for apprenticeship programs is typically divided into two parts: theoretical training, which is conducted in government-approved ITI (Industrial Training Institutes) and practical training, which is conducted on-the-job at the railway workshops or production units. The theoretical training generally lasts for a period of two years, during which the apprentices learn the principles and theories of their chosen trade. After the completion of theoretical training, the apprentices are then sent for on-the-job training at railway workshops or production units. The duration of practical training varies depending on the trade, but typically ranges between six months to one year. During this time, apprentices will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom to real-world situations. The Indian Railways Apprentice program covers various trades such as: Fitter, Welder, Carpenter, Electrician, Turner, Machinist, Painter, and Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Mechanic. These trades are important for the functioning and maintenance of the Indian Railways. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, the trainee will be certified by the NCVT and can seek employment opportunities with the Indian Railways or any other industry.
