It is recognized as a separate breed by some kennel clubs. Its bodily dimensions are similar to the Newfoundland … The Landseer can weigh more than 170 pounds, and stand around 31 inches tall. It’s said to have an easy going disposition, and given its large size is a very capable swimmer … and has been reported to rescue drowning people. Newfoundland These creatures were bred as working dogs for fishermen in Canada. In some cases, they can weigh around 200 pounds (or more) and are usually known for having a black coat … but they can also be brown, grey or white. Newfs (or Newfies) are stoic and intelligent dogs, and graceful swimmers for their large size. They’re often referred to a gentle giants. Irish Wolfhound While this immense, muscular hound can stands around 3 feet tall … they’re listed as the tallest of dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. But at 120 pounds, they’re one of the more svelte dogs on the list. They’re similar in build to greyhounds, and can cover great distances at full gallop. Did you know, the Wolfhound is named for its role in hunting wolves with dogs … not for its appearance. Boerboel (BOO-r-bull, or close) This is one of the most powerful dog breeds, standing about 28 inches and weighing more than 175 pounds -- although some estimates are higher. They were bred as guard dogs in South Africa, and their name roughly translates to “Farmer’s Dog” (from Afrikaans -- af-rih-KANZ). The dog has a long breeding history, but it’s unknown exactly which breeds (or how many) were used to create it. Fiercely loyal, they’re said to have protected their families from lions! St Bernard This is likely one of the most famous breeds of dog, instantly recognizable by their distinctive coat and enormous size. They’re often identified with stories of alpine rescues … in fact, they were originally bred in the Alps for such duty. Standing up to 3 feet tall, they can weigh more than 250 pounds … although the largest St Bernard was said to weigh an amazing 366 pounds! Contrary to their popular image, we’re told these dogs do not actually carry little barrels of booze around their necks. We’re including this picture, mainly because it got our attention -- that definitely looks like a huge dog. To be honest, this looks like it could be a Photoshop job … or maybe the photographer used a bit of forced perspective by putting the dog in the foreground to make it appear so big. We couldn’t positively identify the dog’s breed … although it looks kind of like the Akbash that appears on our list. Whatever, the breed, it must be a heavy shedder if the lady has to use a vacuum to clean up the fur. How much do you think it weighs? English Mastiff Often referred to simply as a ‘Mastiff’, these dogs can grow extremely large, weighing up to 250 pounds, with a thick body that is deeply muscled. In terms of sheer mass, this is the largest breed of dog. While other dogs like the Great Dane are taller, they’re not as robust as the Mastiff. Did you know this breed produced a specimen with one of the heaviest weights ever documented for any dog? That critter tipped the scales at 343 pounds! Great Dane These animals are pretty well synonymous with the term, ‘big dog’. They’re one of the tallest breeds of dog, usually standing some 32 inches at the shoulder … although one specimen cited by Guinness stood 44 inches tall. They can weigh up to 200 pounds … and when standing on their hind legs, they can be taller than many humans! This immensely strong breed is known for being patient and friendly. And maybe they’re good at solving mysteries … did you know Scooby-Doo was a fictional version of a Great Dane?
