The latest toys, games and hobbies from the UK Toy Fair

(25 Jan 2017) LEAD IN: Technology that allows you to make music by dancing and giant, inflatable body balls are some of the highlights at this year's London Toy Fair. The show in London is the first chance outside of Asia to see the latest must-have trendy toys for 2017. STORY LINE: This isn't dancing to music, this is creating music by dancing. The BeatMoovz system from Japan uses electronic bracelets which can be worn on the wrists and ankles. The bracelets respond to a user's movements and with pre-programmed sounds and instruments in the app, the dancing creates the soundtrack... of course, a little bit of talent also helps. The system is the brainchild of Japanese dancer, engineer and inventor Daigo Kusunoki. He wanted to find a way to create music by dancing, rather than just dancing to music. Danny Kishon is his agent representing him internationally. "So when Daigo shakes his hand... he's put a sound into that band. You can put up to 400 different sounds into the band. And what that allows him to do is by dancing to create his own backing track," he says. Up to 40,000 can use the system at once to create even more complicated polyphonic tracks... once again, a little bit of timing also helps. Kishon says: "You can do crazy things like the robot for example. So he's choosing different sounds now for his hands and for his feet." The system is controlled with an app from a smartphone - the intuitive interface lets users scroll through the list of instruments and program their bracelets. The system costs around £50 and will be available in July 2017 in the UK. Following on from the season opening fair in Hong Kong, London is the first chance outside of Asia many of these products will be seen. Under the glass roof of Olympia are many of what will become the hottest toys of the coming year... expect to see many of these on a Christmas list near you come December. The Toy Fair is the UK's only dedicated toy, game and hobby trade show and features more than 270 companies exhibiting. If BeatMoovz seems like it requires a bit too much skill, then how about strapping yourself inside a giant inflatable and turning yourself into a human pinball. The Wicked Socker Bopper Body Bubble Balls are the most dynamic and calamitous new toy at the show. The high-impact demonstrators spend their day smashing into one another - but like the rubber balls they become, they always bounce back. David Strang, managing director of Wicked explains: "They're giant inflatable balls that you actually climb inside, so there's a harness inside and there's handles to hold onto, so you can play bubble football." But perhaps flying full pelt into friends seems a bit dangerous - well, not according to Strang. "Yes it is safe," he says. "So the only thing that is exposed is your legs, you're surrounded by air, you're actually inside a bubble you've got a harness that's keeping you in place, you've got handles to hold onto, but if you fall over and undoubtedly you're going to fall over, the only humiliating thing is it's going to be really hard to get yourself back up, but yes it is safe." The person inside is protected by a bubble of air, but it's easy to accidentally tap into other people on a crowded show floor. The Wicked Socker Bopper Body Bubble Balls retails at £49.99 and will go on sale from March 2017. The yo-yo has been reinvented for a new generation, this is Thumb Chucks. These pocket money priced (£7.99) toys require skill and dexterity to perfect. Tricks can be recorded and uploaded and Thumb Chucks awards achievements, like the Karate colour-coded belt system.
