DEFENCE 'Folding' around the tackle area

This is a great drill to develop the defensive fold around the tackle area during phase play. Utilising three groups of players, they will all transition from attack, to defence and practice 'folding' around the tackle area into a defence. Here to begin, we use three tackle tubes as our 'breakdown' and then one group holds the tackle shields (to the left of tackle area), the defence numbers up on them, and to the right of the tackle area is the attacking group. On the coaches whistle, the tackle shields come forward, initiating the defence to come up and hit the shields, driving them back a few steps before folding under the tackle area and setting up their defence against the attacking team. The scrum half then plays the ball to the first receiver and the attacking team plays one phase against the defence. The first group with the shields moves to defence, the defence to attack and the attack become the shield holders. COACHING POINTS: Hitting shields: Line up on inside of target, get feet in close, low, strong body position, head in neutral, cheek to cheek, hit with shoulder, punch levers through and grip... drive feet! Folding. Scanning threats, fill in from tackle area out over, first defender stays and protects against snipes and P&G's, second defender moves forward focusing on half back and any tight runners, third defender is the 'ball' defender initiating the defensive line's forward movement and line speed. All other defenders continuously scanning and shuffling into their spacing. Focus on tackle height, driving the feet and completing the tackle! Communication... clear and concise (not just white noise!) PROGRESSIONS: Increase intensity and speed. Add numbers (with the threat of a scrum half snipe or a pick and drive) BE CREATIVE in your progressions! #rugbyunion #defence #tackle #breakdown
