Artist Interview: Scent by Victoria Hertel | Art Outreach Singapore

Scent | 8 – 17 July 2022, Art Outreach Singapore Victoria Hertel Scent (2022) functions as a real time visualisation mechanism between human and nonhuman materialities. Constructed to refocus our attention to the present moment, surrounding space and our presence in it, the installation changes with our engagement. Consisting of a volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor that artificially mimics the human olfactory sense, the work detects, measures and features molecules into scent data. In interacting with the sensor, our molecular input is translated into a projected particle system, with our individual aromatic profiles corresponding to a personal set of light gradients. In this interview: Victoria Hertel, an artist, discusses her interdisciplinary collaboration with Scent Analytics on the project 'Scent'. The project uses a VOC sensor to capture and visualise molecules from scent as graphical data, creating a visual representation of an individual's aromatic profile. This work explores the influence of the environment on humans and vice versa, highlighting the interconnectedness of various elements such as air, molecules, and human perception. The collaboration involves AI, data, light, and human interaction, aiming to raise awareness of the continuous, invisible processes in our surroundings. // [hearth] is a community art space initiative by Art Outreach to support independent Singapore-based practitioners with free space and micro-grant funding to create and exhibit their work. We offer a purpose-built, museum quality space in Gillman Barracks as a platform for diverse mediums and rich artistic explorations, often engaging with social or environmental concerns.
