THE DARK GLEN OF McCANCE Here is an atmospheric song for the Christmas season, inspired by the story of the Mass rocks and the people and clergy who risked everything to attend Mass there during the dark penal years. The song is entitled ‘The Dark Glen of McCance’ and is intended to be a description of a secret Christmas morning Mass celebration taking place many years ago, at the Mass rock in Colin Glen, also known as McCance’s Glen, in the Belfast Hills. The song is sung by the wonderful Denise McKeegan, whose beautiful interpretation fits the mood of the song perfectly - I am very grateful to Denise for her work on the song. There are a number of authentic touches to the soundtrack, including the sound of the stream and general woodland sounds which were actually recorded at the site of the Colin Glen Mass rock, and the whispered words of the priest were recorded for me by Fr. Martin Graham who is one of the celebrants of the traditional Latin Mass here in Belfast - the Latin rite is the one which would have been celebrated at the Mass rocks. Fr. Martin also gave me some valuable historical advice when I was writing the song earlier this year, so extra thanks to him for that as well. Additional thanks go to my sister-in-law Claire Feenan, who videoed the opening and closing snow sequences for me near her home in Canada, to Michael Nelson for his advice on accessing the Mass rock, and to Mark Doherty and Jim Deeds for accompanying me on recent visits to the Colin Glen Mass rock. And not forgetting Fr. Brian O’Baoighill, for kindly letting me use his photograph of the fox who visits his garden! I hope you like the song - thanks for listening xx
