ANAGAMA FIRING - The Making of Matcha Bowls Let us introduce Mr. Saeki. He is the local artist who preserve the traditional anagama firing (anagama pottery). We’re so delighted when he invited us to see him baking matcha bowls. It was remarkable experience coz it was only conducted once a year! The Anagama firing uses approximately 15,000 logs of Japanese red pine firewood at once. While red pine is relatively costly, it has high oil content, which elevates the temperature, ranging from 1000 to 1300 degrees Celsius. Kengo Sakaie is a ceramic artist, born in Kyoto and residing in Yubune. He diligently fires his pieces for an extended period of 8 to 10 days which enhances the depth of color and patterns in his work. Funfacts about Mr. Saeki’s work: ⭐️ The entire process of soil crafting with his own hands. ⭐️ The local soil is from Yubune, a neighboring town of Shigaraki. The soil is renowned as the ancient Biwako layer, considered a miraculous earth ideal for ceramics. ⭐️ The pottery technique is known as “hollowing out,” where a lump of clay is carved out to shape the vessel. This process involves compacting the clay to create the surface texture. ⭐️ Only about 30% of the pottery produced in the entite process is usable, while the rest might get damaged or develop imperfections, unsuitable for sale. All the process illustrate the uniqueness of his craftmanship and how valuable it is. Support him preserving the Japanese traditional arts by purchasing the product on our website at dmatcha.com!
