This video will help you get into THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS, by Ursula K. Le Guin. It's a brilliant novel, but it is also quite difficult to get into in some ways. Our narrator (most of the time), Genly Ai is the lone representative of advanced civilization on an alien world. Here are a few things I left out of the video. Gethen/Winter: -people who live there are pretty much human, with some significant differences in sex/gender. How do these biological differences shape culture and power? This is a key question in the novel. -civilizations on the planet have a distinct histories/mythologies/religions -planet has very harsh climate (very cold, lots of snow/ice) and few large animals (nothing like cows, elephants, etc.); low biodiversity in general Struggles for 1st time readers: -a ton of terminology that relates to alien (Genthenian) cultural practices.... -shrigrethor: an important aspect of social relations, having to do with pride an honor. A very alien concept to Genly Ai. He doesn't understand it, so for the first half of the book the reader doesn't understand it either....
