Aruán Ortiz NEW Trio Live at Porgy and Bess Jazz Club

Aruán Ortiz Trio Live at Porgy and Bess, Vienna featuring legendary drummer John Betsch and the amazing bassist Brad Jones. Sept 15th, 2022 Aruán Ortiz new trio just finished the recording of his 6th album with Swiss label Intakt Records (release date: Spring 2023), that features bassist Brad Jones (Ornette Coleman, Elvis Costello, Elvin Jones, Muhal Richard Abrams, Vernon Reid, John Zorn, Don Byron, Marc Ribot, The Jazz Passengers) and master drummer John Betsch (Max Roach, Abdullah Ibrahim, Steve Lacy, Henry Threadgill, Mal Waldron, Marilyn Crispell). This album is a celebration of his 50th birthday, summarizing the musical influences that have shaped Aruán's artistic vision and deepened his personal approach as a performer and composer since he left his hometown, Santiago de Cuba, in 1996. Conceived as an ode to self with an eye to the future, this album expands his concept of integrating Afro-Haitian traditions of Cuba, avant-garde and progressive jazz, serial music, and contemporary classical language, and finding inspirations from other artistic expressions like cubism, pointillism, and Afrofuturism. Aruán's ability to understand compositions as living entities, constantly mutating, permuting, and reshaping themselves makes his creative voice a melting pot of styles and influences. Matthew Fiander from says: “a solid and unique new sound in today’s jazz world," Derek Taylor from Dusted Magazine opines: [Aruán's music] "illustrates that alchemy at length in a dizzying display of technique, energy and stylistic legerdemain that regularly leaves ears and brain scrambling to keep up and absorb the abundant details of the extended itinerary as it blazes by"; and Lynn René Bayley from The Art Music Lounge calls his music, "completely hypnotic, drawing the listener deep into the workings of the trio’s musical mind."
