Re:Think 2024: Aarav on Revolution, Rebirth, & Repression: Secularism & Religion in the Modern World

The Re:Think Essay Competition is dedicated to nurturing critical thinking and encouraging the exploration of a wide array of thought-provoking and, at times, controversial topics. In 2024, Re:Think underscores the pivotal role that discourse, debate, and critical analysis play in addressing complex societal challenges. This year, CCIR received over 4,200 submissions from students representing more than 50 countries. From these entries, our distinguished jury panel—comprising scholars from both sides of the Atlantic—selected approximately 350 students for Honourable Mention, with 33 ultimately being recognised as award winners. In this video, we interview one of the Gold Award recipients, Aarav Rastogi from Oberoi International School JVLR Campus in India, whose winning essay, "Revolution, Rebirth, and Repression: Secularism and Religion in the Modern World," explores the enduring prominence of religion in modern society and how misinterpretations of secularism have allowed religion to gain influence by shielding it from criticism and granting it special exemptions.
