Mote Marine Laboratory is made up of scientists, explorers, and stewards of the ocean. They work to create a healthier ocean for the future of our planet. Ian Combs is the coral nursery manager on Summerland Key. He oversees the propagation, care, out-planting, and monitoring of corals housed at Mote's ex situ coral nursery. This talk will explore Mote's numerous efforts and holistic approach to coral restoration, including the role of crabs in this endeavor. While Mote's work is primarily focused on Florida's coral reefs, they also have collaborative projects in the Caribbean, including Belize and Mexico. For the last few years, work studies have been done with native crab populations to facilitate large scale coral reef restorations. Crabs help save the reef by grazing on harmful algae growth.
