The world needs to pivot to a Net Zero economy. This shift will have a tremendous impact on the financial services industry through providing targeted lending and investments to help clients reduce their carbon footprint. For many financial institutions, the top priority is calculating their exposure to the oil and gas sector. However, only a small proportion of the sector’s emissions come from the production of oil and gas (Scope 1 emissions). The majority of the sector’s emissions are generated by downstream consumers (Scope 3 emissions) – for example, people driving their cars and heating their homes. The financial services industry is uniquely positioned to support the transition as oil and gas companies will need to invest in different types of energy production.
