This hearty and nutritious dish is made from whole black lentils, which are rich in protein and fiber, making it an excellent choice for a wholesome meal. Cooked to perfection with aromatic spices, Kaali Masoor Daal offers a rich, earthy flavor that pairs beautifully with rice, roti, or naan. Whether you're looking for a comforting dish on a chilly day or a healthy vegetarian option, Kaali Masoor Daal is sure to satisfy your taste buds and nourish your body. INGREDIENTS : 1 cup Kaali Masoor Daal (black lentils) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 medium tomato, finely chopped 2-3 green chilies, slit 1 tbs cumin seeds (zeera) 1 tbs ginger-garlic paste 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi) 1/2 tsp red chili powder Salt to taste 1/2 tbs oil or ghee Fresh coriander leaves for garnish 4-5 cups water INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Rinse the Daal: Wash the Kaali Masoor Daal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the daal in water for about 15-20 minutes. 2. Cook the Daal: In a pot or pressure cooker, add the soaked daal and 4-5 cups of water. Add salt, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Pressure cook the daal for 3-4 whistles or until it’s soft and tender. If using a regular pot, cook until the daal is tender (may take 25-30 minutes). 3. Prepare the Tadka (Tempering): In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn light brown. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears. Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and the oil starts to separate. 4. Combine and Simmer: Add the cooked daal to the tadka mixture. Mix well. Let it simmer on low heat for about 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend. Adjust salt and consistency as per your preference. You can add more water if the daal is too thick. 5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
